summertime celebrations and your pet

While we might enjoy all of the celebrations that happen during the summer months, our pets do not always feel the same. With Independence Day right around the corner, it's time to start preparing for fireworks and other forms of celebration that may trigger fear and anxiety in your pets. There are many ways to prepare your pet and yourself for these events, such as;
  • Looking ahead to find out which veterinary clinics or emergency hospitals are open and when.
  • Updating and preparing all microchip and ID tag information as well as having all vaccine/medical records on hand.
  • Bring in all outdoor pets so they are unable to run from your property in fear. Bolting can cause them to become lost and/or injured.
  • Leash walk pets that need to go outdoors to go potty- even in a fenced in yard.
  • If you're going to be gone and your pet is used to be in a kennel, use the kennel to ensure your pet does not get into anything that can cause harm or try to escape your home.
  • Keep a calm environment at home- leave the television or calming music on.
  • Secure all doors and windows. Pets tend to be confused by the source of the terrifying noises and will attempt to jump through windows, doors or even jump fences in an attempt to get away.
  • Use natural calming remedies or prescribed medications to help ease the stress and anxiety your pet may be feeling.
  • Stay in with your pets rather than going out. Sometimes being home with them makes all the difference.
Signs of anxiety in pets can include: pacing, trembling, panting, drooling, attention-seeking (vocalizing, pawing, nuzzling, and climbing on people), hiding, and bolting. Attempts to escape can involve hiding behind furniture, and staying in a basement or bathroom. Nervous pets may drink more water, especially during hot days. Remember to provide access to water even if you're away. If you are looking for recommendations for anti-anxiety medications or even natural calming aids, our doctor and staff can help you find the best product for your pet. Please call to schedule an appointment or ask any questions.
